So for visual aids, here is the actual field the Squad faced for the first Training Exercise they participated in. The table is oriented east and west, with the large farm complex being on the East edge of the area of operation.
The scenario presented to the squad was as follows:
They were the advance patrol of a company, they were to expect minimal resistance; and conduct the patrol/advance as a RECON mission. The primary mission therefore was information gathering, and the elimination of only small pockets of resistance.
The enemy forces were three German soldiers in the large Farm complex; one sniping from the stone silo tower; and three other Germans approaching from the south, trying to get back to their parent unit. The first group of enemy were actively looking to delay any Americans encountered; the second were looking to avoid contact altogether.
The first photo is the the view from the American end of the field, the second the view from the German end. Close review shows that Sgt. Lewis did a fine job in the creation of his map.
